Questioning Jesus

Questioning Jesus

Have you attended a Sunday School class encouraging you to imagine what it would have been like to live in Jesus’ time? Teachers ask, would you be among those questioning Jesus? I didn’t really appreciate the purpose of the exercise. My imagination had a hard time getting past the thoughts of limited bathing and no deodorant.

The Chosen

However, as I watched The Chosen, it confronted me with the reality of Jesus being a man as I could have never imagined. In season two, episode three, Matthew 4:24, Jesus is healing people all day and into the night. It was not like a fairy tale where he waved a magic wand and, POOF, done. They bloodied him as he lay his hands on their wounds. Jesus was exhausted, physically drained.

In season one, episode eight, I Am He, Jesus travels with his new disciples. As he heads toward Samaria, the disciples didn’t understand why. His path seems dangerous, and they question his decision. Jesus says, “Listen. If we are going to have a question-and-answer session every time we do something you’re not used to, then it’s going to be a very annoying time together for all of us. We’ll be fine. So follow me.”

Jesus is saying the same thing to us today as we question his timing, motives, and decisions made on our behalf. Jesus experienced every part of being human to save our souls. Are you questioning Jesus, or will you stop doubting and follow Him?

News about him spread as far as Syria, and people soon began bringing to him all who were sick. And whatever their sickness or disease, or if they were demon possessed or epileptic or paralyzed—he healed them all.

Matthew 4:24 NLT

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

John 8:12 NIV
